November white

I was feeling the greyness of November very heavily on my psyche the other day, when I wrote the post, November Blues.  I don’t think I really believed that it was only the dreariness of the weather that was making me feel so down, but when I woke up this morning and the world was white and the light coming in reflected that, I could feel my spirits rising.  I know the people who hate winter, such as my husband, Dave, will be groaning as they read this, but I can’t help thinking that winter is not my least favourite season.  It might be up there with spring, in fact.  Snow is a huge factor in how I feel about winter, because without snow, and with just relentlessly cold and grey days, I would hate winter with a passion.  I would be all for getting on a plane and taking off for three or four months, the way Dave is always talking about.  But snow makes it bearable, even beautiful.

Sure, snow provides us with plenty to complain about, too.  Traffic jams, difficulty walking, shoveling, slush, and the list goes on, but you have to admit, it transforms the world into something lovely.

The problem with winter is that it lasts too long, I will agree with that statement.  Here in Montreal, we get snow from November to April or even May sometimes.  I have known winters where the snow didn’t really arrive until after Christmas, but that’s rare.  With the changes in climate we’ve been experiencing, who knows?  I think we’ll be in for more ice storms, wind storms and other unusual phenomena.  Reminds me of the old Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times.” Was there ever an uninteresting time? Maybe the Chinese have a strong sense of irony.

Maybe this isn’t an appropriate song for this post, but I heard it today and it’s a song I love.  Sometimes sad songs make you feel happy, so I hope this one does.
